How will the November 2016 Presidential Election impact the U.S. Healthcare System?

8/28/2016

By Pete Brately

Most voters are aware that PPACA “Obamacare” reforms (signed into law on March 23, 2010) are facing serious challenges and appear to be on the path to failure without government modifications:
  • Less competition in the market place is driving rate increases of 10% to 50%+ in some areas.
  • Of the 23 state-run co-ops created after PPACA was signed, only 7 remain in business. The rest have failed and have left taxpayers on the hook for tens of millions of dollars in loan guarantees. Individuals insured by failed co-ops will need to look to other carriers for coverage.
  • 3 top nationwide carriers (Aetna, Humana, United Healthcare) are exiting the majority of the states where they currently offer plans.
  • According the McKinsey Center for US Health Reform, 17% of Americans only have access to one carrier through the individual exchanges.

What are the two candidates official plans to fix the problems?
Hillary Clinton has stated she will “build on the progress we’ve made” and make a “public option” possible.

Donald Trump has stated he will: “Repeal and replace with something terrific."

Keep in mind, the congressional election is equally important to the future direction of the U.S. Healthcare system.
